Update: 1989 Mustang GT Sold!
August 2007 – After quite a bit of deliberation, I’ve sold the 1989 Mustang GT described below that was originally designated as the donor. A couple of factors when into the decision, including:
- Mike Percy of Cypress Automotive Salvage in Oakland had a really nice deal on a strong 1993 Mustang GT.
- The 1989 was a pretty nice car and should probably be fixed up.
- The hassle of tearing down the donor and disposing of all the parts.
Finding a Donor
Sometime in the summer of 2006 I received final approval (thaks Karen!) to move forward with the FFR Cobra project, provided it was a "budget build" utilizing a Mustang donor.
I immediately set up a couple of "watch lists" using my Netvibes home page and some RSS feeds from the Seattle and Portland Craigslist. This way I could watch items tagged with "mustang" in almost real time. Finding an unmolested Mustang from 1989 to 1993 is getting harder all the time and I needed to respond quickly once I found one.
In August 2006 I spotted a 1989 Mustang GT on Craigslist for $2700.00 and snatched it up. The car spent most of it’s life in Montana and has 117,000 miles. The body is straight and original with a few minor dings. The front air dam has been pushed back, probably more than once, with some of the plastic cracking and both fog lights broken out.
The pictures make the car look like it’s pretty good shape, but it isn’t anything special and since there aren’t any modifications or obvious repairs, makes for an ideal donor.
